Actor, producer, director U.S. Vadiraj no more

Well-known producer, director and actor U.S. Vadiraj passed away in the city this morning (6th February, 2004) at 6 a.m. due to cardiac arrest. Vadiraj, son of U.S. Paniyadi - a freedom fighter basically hails from Udipi (Dakshina Kannada). This simple, disciplined man was born on 03rd January, 1927 was 77 when died.

As an actor Vadiraj is known more for comedy roles but was great producer too. Films produced by him with his brother Jawahar were not just an entertainment piece but used to have good message and songs. Evergreen song 'Barede Neenu Ninna Hesara Nanna Baala Putadali….' from film Seeta of his direction is one such example. Film 'Nandi' starring Dr. Rajkumar and Harini (Vadiraj's sister) was a trendsetter. His other films were Naa Mechchida Huduga, Nava Jeevana, Namma Makkalu, Nammammana Sose, Adhe Kannu, Seetheyalla Savitri. Another film of his Dangeyedda Makkalu was a Swarna Kamala Award winner. Nanda Deepa was yet another film produced by him had won National Award and many State awards. Innondu Mukha - a children film of his was screened in IIFF and other International Film Fests.

Vadiraj

Apart from being a producer, director and actor, this veteran served the industry in many other ways. He was the Chairman of State Award Committee during 2001-02. Was awarded Dr. Rajkumar Award during 1998-99 for his service to Kannada Filmdom. Vadiraj had a great ambition of making an animated film for International viewers based on Indian story but his dream remained as a dream. 'Nava Jeevana' being his debut film, 'Khaki' was the last Kannada movie he acted. He was supposed to act in 'Mata' (produced by R.S. Productions starring Jaggesh) but fate didn't allow it.
