Mourya - film review
What
happens when a director 'branded' for sentiment movies try
his hands on an action thriller? It results in 'Mourya'! Yes.
S. Narayan identified the Telugu flick 'Amma Nanna O Tamil
Ammai' as a right fit for the image and talent of 'power star'
Puneeth. Adding his expert touch to it, S. Narayan presents
Mourya as an action cum sentiment film. Though this movie
produced by Rockline Venkatesh is a Telugu remake, it reminds
'Tayige Takka Maga'! Unlike in most of the movies where it
starts with an entry of the hero, Mourya starts with a gang
of people teasing Meena (Roja), a lecturer. Then enters her
son Manu (Puneeth), a boxing champ, with an obvious fight
to thrash the villains. Movie goes on with an amicable, affectionate,
naughty, angry, comedy and thrilling moments. Entry of the
heroine Meera Jasmine adds adequate comic relief. Each frame
looks lively and makes you enjoy every bit of the film. It
keeps you guessing… Who is his father? Why Manu detests him?
Mourya is certainly a good movie till then!
You
start seeing the 'real' touch of S. Narayan in the second
half! As per his mother's last wish, Manu joins his father
(Devaraj), a boxer again! Then onwards, you will be immersed
with overdose of sentiments and incoherent consequences. Of
course sentiment plays a major role in commercial films. But
here the 'power' of power star has gone futile. Mourya reminds
S. Narayan's low-key Kannada tele-serial Sumathi at times
that is a bathetic extravaganza! Film nears the end with an
age-old formula of hero getting kicks in boxing ring to safeguard
his family and concludes with badly beaten up champion bouncing
back to thrash the villain!
Roja, who played against Ravichandran in Kalavida, decorates
the role of a mother in Mourya! Puneeth once again wins -
be in action or dance sequence, he shines as always. It's
the presentation and narration that fails. Its delusive to
see a rough, detesting young man turning over emotional! Meera
Jasmine as half Telugu - half Kannada girl has done a neat
job. Though she is a brilliant actress, looks a little short
and fatty. Nothing unusual in Gurukiran's tunes. Good work
by the cinematographer Das.
