  Uppi Dada - film review

How do you define 'Uppi Dada M.B.B.S'?

Ask anyone who has seen both 'Uppidada M.B.B.S' and its original 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S'. There comes the reply, 'A body without a soul'.

When you remake a super success film like 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S' comparisons are inevitable. Director D. Rajendra Babu who has mastered the art of remaking knows this very well. That's why he has carefully copied the original film. He has been successful in this work. But what he has not been able to copy from the original film is the soul. 'Uppidada M.B.B.S' has everything to boast for except the orignial soul. Well, its impossible and foolish to expect soul as originals are originals.

UmaBut Babu must be appreciated for making a daring attempt of remaking a film which has already come in three languages. If one has not seen the original film and the other remakes as well, then he will certainly enjoy this film. No doubt about it.

Well, here is the story for the ones who have not seen the original nor its remakes. Uppidada is a extortionist who does small extortion jobs for money. He is the son of an honest and upright person Srinath living in the village. Srinath is made to believe that Uppidada is a doctor running a hospital in his name. Every year when Srinath visits town, Uppidada sets up a makeshift hospital with fake patients.

This time when Srinath comes to town, he want to marry off his son. He meets his old buddy Ananthnag who is a docor. Ananthnag's daughter Uma is also a doctor. Both friends decide that their children would make a perfect pair. But Ananthnag comes to know that Uppidada is an extortionist and not a doctor. He insults Srinath in front of Uppidada for deceiving him. To restore his father's honor Uppidada decides to become a doctor and marry Uma. By faking exams he gets admission to a medical college where Ananthnag is the dean. The rest is how Uppidada settles score with Ananthnag. Upendra as Uppidada is ok. He is particularly very good in comedy and the climax sequences. Uma has also done a great job. Its very sad to see a actor of Ananthnag's calibre doing a role which is not suitable for him. He looks perfect as a dean. His gestures, looks are excellent. But the way his laughter therapy tests your patience. Gurudutt, Srinath, Sumithra are ok.

The songs can't be compared with the original ones. But still R.P. Patnaik gives two melodious songs. Cinematography by H M Ramachandra is okay. There is nothing new in dialogues as they are directly translated from the original.

Watch it if you haven't seen the original.
