'Devdas' - now in Kannada starring Upendra
Recent
success of Raktha Kanneeru of Upendra inspired him and the
film troupe to venture into one more big budget, high expectation
film Devdas. Film was launched on Saturday under the banners
of Vrushabhadri Productions of Munirathna. Devdas is based
on well-known novel of Bengali writer Sharath Chandra. Kokila
Sadhu is directing the film with music. This is not the first
film based on this novel. Is already been filmed six times
in Telugu, Bengali, whats more even in Hindi starring Sharuk
Khan. Kannada version of Devdas will be the seventh film.
Though the Hindi version of Sanjay Leela Bansali made big
news in Indian film history, Upendra was impressed by Nageshwar
Rao's performance in Telugu version. He wants to give new
interpretation to this film through unique dialogue styles
and acting. He wants to watch all related movies and read
the novel so that he can excel and give much more than expected.
His intension is to make justice to that wonderful novel.
Devdas is purely based on making and performance. So the responsibility
is on the shoulders of the hero and the director. Caution
has to be taken in all aspects including costumes to choosing
right heroine, as this will be compared with rest of the films
done earlier in other languages. Cast selection is still on
for apt people. Parvathi, Chandramukhi and Chunnilal are the
lead characters apart from Devdas.
Like
Raktha Kanneeru, even in Devdas, Upendra wants to give the
punch through dialogues. Liquor, Shayiry and ghazals go together
very well. So he refers to Pankaj Udhas. Uppi's creative
juice is already gurgling and the finger twitching started.
After film `A' Upendra once again acting in drunkard role
here. His fans who liked 'A' may like this film too. Character
of Devdas is not that of a sot. His is an immortal love. There
is lots of scope for sentiment and emotional touchy performance.
Memory of Hindi version of Devdas is still fresh in everyone's
mind. So people will certainly expect similar or better movie
from Uppi. But the film troupe is completely denying that
they are not going to base this on Hindi version at all. However,
the effectiveness of the film will be decided after its release
on Sept. 18th, which happens to be Uppi's birthday too! We
wish the troupe a very good luck.
