Kariya
film review
You must have heard about Jairaj, Kotval, Kitti, Koli
Payaz etc who were ruling the underworld in Karnataka.
Imagine seeing such rowdies on the screen… Kariya
produced by Anekal Balaraj is such an attempt,
directed by Prem. Filming underworld stories
is not a new concept in the industry. But having real life
rowdies as part of the film is something risky and more than
that, making them act is a big task. Prem's debut direction
Kariya has around 22 rowdies from all over the places - Bangalore,
Mysore, Mandya etc. Many incidents that happened around us
in the past - Shivajinagar murder, Srirampuram case, K.R.
Market murder etc were breath-taking incidents. You would
be chilled to see them on screen once again… That does not
mean that the whole film is about blood full of screen. You
can even see blooming love of teens amongst the sparks of
thalwar.
Kariya
(Darshan), a young gangster is a nightmare for many area rowdies.
He attracts Maya (Abhi) who is an educated
girl belongs to a rich family. Though she falls in love with
Kariya, she expects him to acclaim it as per her friend's
suggestion. She waits for the utter moment to hear that magical
word 'I Love You' from him. But he is unable to express his
love towards her until the end; which ends up in tragedy.
There are some catchy dialogs and comedy to make you laugh
if you are freezed looking at the blood pool. 'Criminals are
not born but made' is one part of the film while the society
won't let a criminal lead a normal life is another message
of the film. Having real-life rowdies was the key selling
point of the film. If you watch closely, you can see repels
of Om and Ram Gopal Varma's Satya here. Though Darshan tried
his best, is not a right fit for such roles. Gurukiran plays
safe by giving what producer and director are happy with.
One
can make out the influence of Hindi film songs. Films like
this, which does not have any story line, makes an impact
by its cinematography. Shot mainly in rain in dark creates
appropriate mood for the situation. Credit goes to
M.R. Seenu. Great job by Prem by making those rowdies
act and pulling out the corruption in our society! Apart from
that, debutante Abhi reminds her mother Anuradha and attracts
attention in dance. B. Jayashridevi has a
very small role but touches the heart. Watch the film if you
want to look into the life of rowdies.
Direction & Story: Prem
Producer: Anekal Balaraj
Music: Guru Kiran
Cast: Darshan Toogudeep, Abhi, 23 real rowdies from Karnataka
etc
