Maharaja - film review
If you call a movie a 'family melodrama', it will be a sentiment
flick in most of the cases. Sudeep starrer 'Maharaja'
is one such film directed by Saiprakash who is branded
for sentiment stories. Though this story looks age-old, as
far as our society respects human values and relationships,
such movies cant be called dated. Sudeep who in most of the
cases acted as a dynamic hero, at times proved himself in
emotional consequences. He goes a step ahead in Maharaja and
its actress Bharathi Vishnuvardhan who joins him to intense
the emotional scenes. Apparently, director Saiprakash and
producer R.S. Gowda have come together after super hit 'Tavarige
Baa Thangi'. So you can imagine the double impact!
Movie
starts with an orphan boy Surya (Sudeep) and ends with him.
He is brought up by Annapurna (Bharathi) and Rajashekhar (Ashok).
Though the mother treats Surya as one of her three sons, Rajashekhar
fails to accept him as son. Surya is ill treated by his stepbrothers
and their wives. Still, his sole intention is the betterment
of his family and to safeguard them from any abasements. And
hence, to save his family from embarrassments he takes all
the blames from others and even goes to jail for the faults
of others. But Rajashekhar kicks him out and by the time he
realizes his mistake, its too late! Such climax may hurt the
emotions of Sudeep's fans but this is what we see in most
of the movies where the hero looses the heroine while trying
to save someone else.
We can say, this is not a routine role for Sudeep. He once
again proves himself as a versatile actor both for class and
mass audience. Actress Bharathi shines in emotional scenes,
which is the core of the film. Heroine Nikitha
had a very limited scope for acting. As a matter of fact,
hero's sister has much more importance than the heroine! Director
Saiprakash made it a point to bring comic relief to break
the monotony. Doddanna and Tennis Krishna makes you laugh
at times. Nothing much to talk about S.A. Rajkumar's music.
B.A. Madhu's dialogs are one of the plus. In a nutshell, if
you enjoy sentiment movies, Maharaja is for you. If you like
to see Sudeep only as an action hero, Maharaja is not for
you!
